Races in Funny Places: Theme Park Runs (Where the Finish Line is More Thrilling Than the Rides)

February 26, 2025

Welcome back to "Races in Funny Places," the series that explores running events in the most unexpected locations. This time, we’re diving into the world of theme park runs, where roller coasters, haunted houses, and fairy-tale castles are part of the scenery. From Disney magic to iconic UK amusement parks, these races add a touch of adrenaline-fuelled whimsy to your usual 5K, 10K, or half marathon. And let’s be honest — how often do you get to say your race route included a loop around a log flume?

Running Through the Magic: Disney’s Themed Races

When it comes to theme park races, it’s hard to overlook the king of magical experiences: Disney. With events at both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida, RunDisney has mastered the art of combining running with childhood nostalgia.

In Disneyland, California, two major annual events stand out: the Halloween Race Series and the Half Marathon Weekend. Both races take participants through the park’s winding paths, past Sleeping Beauty Castle, and alongside the likes of Mickey, Goofy, and the gang. Fancy dress is encouraged, and after all, why wouldn’t you want to jog alongside a runner dressed as a seven-foot Ursula or a pair of siblings in matching Chip and Dale costumes? The courses are as entertaining as the theme park itself, featuring cheering cast members and live music.

Meanwhile, in Walt Disney World, Florida, runners can tackle the Wine and Dine Race Series. Combining 5K, 10K, and half-marathon options, this event is less about intense competition and more about soaking up the atmosphere (and perhaps a little post-race wine). Running through the likes of Epcot and Animal Kingdom offers sights and sounds you won’t get on your typical road race. It’s magical, a bit surreal, and an absolute must for Disney fans.

The UK’s Theme Park Races

For those closer to home, the UK has its fair share of theme park races, offering quirky venues and roller coaster views. One of the most famous is the Run Alton Towers series, which takes place every November at the country’s largest theme park. With 5K, 10K, and half-marathon options, participants are treated to a route that winds through the park’s grounds, taking in iconic coasters like Nemesis and Oblivion. The best part? Runners are granted free access to the rides after the race, because what better way to celebrate finishing a half marathon than with a stomach-churning spin on The Smiler?

Another event gaining traction is Run Drayton Manor. This Staffordshire-based theme park is hosting its inaugural 5K and 10K races this coming April, and the idea is already generating excitement. The park’s more relaxed vibe makes it a great choice for families or newer runners who want a quirky backdrop for their jog. There’s something undeniably charming about the prospect of running past Thomas Land (yes, dedicated to Thomas the Tank Engine) before finishing with a sprint near the roller coasters.

Why Not Ireland?

Unfortunately, Ireland doesn’t yet have its own theme park race, but we can dream. Imagine running through Emerald Park (formerly Tato Park), dodging a giant Mr. Tayto as you loop around the Cu Chulainn Coaster and finish under the shadow of its Viking-themed rides. It would be a race worth signing up for, if only for the novelty of getting a medal shaped like a crisp packet.

What’s the Appeal?

Theme park runs offer a unique combination of physical challenge and unbridled fun. They’re not just for seasoned runners, the atmosphere is inclusive, often family-friendly, and focused more on enjoying the experience than shaving seconds off your personal best. From high-energy starting lines set to the backdrop of iconic rides to the camaraderie of fellow runners in ridiculous costumes, there’s something uniquely joyous about these events.

So, whether you’re a Disney devotee, a roller coaster fanatic, or just someone looking for a fun, unconventional race, theme park runs are a fantastic option. And if you’re lucky enough to live near one, why not give it a try? Who knows, running alongside Mickey Mouse or sprinting past a roller coaster might just be the most thrilling part of your running calendar.

Now, if only someone could bring the magic to Ireland. After all, who wouldn’t want to say they’d run a race with Mr. Tayto cheering them on?
