Superb Semi Final Win Sees English Break Record as Irish Trio Advance on Day Three Morning Session

Ireland enjoyed a perfect start to day three of the European Athletics Championships, with Sophie Becker, Lauren Roy and Mark English all progressing from their respective events during the morning session.

English produced the standout performance, breaking the championship record to book his place in the men’s 800m final, while Becker and Roy advanced from the women’s 400m and 200m heats.

Becker Secures Final Qualification Place

Sophie Becker opened Ireland’s morning in the first heat of the women’s 400m, finishing fourth with a season’s best of 52.28.

With the first thirteen athletes quailfying purely by time, Becker was left facing an anxious wait through the remaining two heats to learn if her time would be enough.

The Irish international ultimately secured the 13th and final place in the semifinals, edging through as the last time qualifier. It may have been tight, but Becker did what was required and will return for tomorrow’s semifinals with another opportunity to build on her season’s best.

Roy Produces Strong 200m Run

Lauren Roy followed in the opening heat of the women’s 200m, where the Fast Twitch AC athlete delivered a solid performance to finish fourth in 23.20.

The Ulster athlete recorded the sixth fastest time across all three heats, comfortably securing her progression to tonight’s semi finals.

Roy will compete in the second sem final before Rhasidat Adeleke makes her eagerly awaited return to international competition in the third semifinal at 8.35pm. Adeleke received a bye through the opening round.

English Smashes Championship Record

The performance of the morning belonged to Mark English, who produced a stunning finish to win the second semifinal of the men’s 800m in a championship record of 1:43.49.

English positioned himself well throughout the race but appeared to be boxed in as the field came off the final bend. With his route to the front narrowing, the Donegal athlete remained patient before finding an opening inside the closing 30 metres.

He surged through the gap and powered across the line to claim victory, breaking the previous championship record and laying down a major marker ahead of tomorrow night’s final.

After the disappointment of missing the final at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, English now returns to the European stage as a genuine medal contender. On the evidence of his semi final performance, he will take some stopping.

Attention Turns to this Evening

Ireland’s day continues this evening with Nicola Tuthill contesting the women’s hammer throw final.

Lauren Roy will then return for the second semi final of the women’s 200m, followed by Rhasidat Adeleke in semi final three at 8.35pm.

English will have to wait until tomorrow night for the men’s 800m final, where the experienced Donegal athlete will enter firmly in the medal conversation.
