How to Watch Irish Athletes on Day One of the European Athletics Championships

The wait is finally over. The 2026 European Athletics Championships get under way today with a packed opening day and a large Irish contingent ready for action.

Mark English and Cian McPhillips begin their 800m campaigns during the morning session, while Ciara Neville and Lauren Roy line up in the women’s 100m. Jack Raftery contests the opening round of the men’s 400m before Eric Favors takes his place in shot put qualification.

The evening session brings Sarah Lavin in the 100m hurdles, Nicola Tuthill in hammer qualification and a major Irish presence in the men’s 5000m final, where Darragh McElhinney, Nick Griggs and Brian Fay all compete. Abbie Sheridan also begins her 3000m steeplechase campaign, with Neville, Roy and Favors potentially returning if they progress.
