Down, Not Out: Sharlene Mawdsley Ruled Out of European Championships

The Newport AC sprinter confirmed the news herself on Friday, three days out from the European Athletics Championships. A hamstring tear has beaten her. The timing was always going to be tight, and it didn't fall her way.
She hasn't given up much ground. Mawdsley said her team worked around the clock, that they pushed the limits together, and that real progress was made after the tear was diagnosed. It just wasn't enough runway.
The cruellest possible timing
At Santry, the national 200m final, Mawdsley lined up against Rhasidat Adeleke as defending champion. She pulled up before the field had even reached the home straight and left the Morton Stadium track in tears. The scan confirmed what the body language already had.
And it lands on a season that was going somewhere. Mawdsley lowered her personal best to 50.06 on her Diamond League debut in Paris in June. She ran inside the A standard six times across the summer, the fifth fastest 400m time in Europe this year. Back in May she strung together three lifetime bests inside five days - 50.52 in Savona, 50.17 in Brussels, then a 23.09 over 200m the following day.Earlier in the month she'd been handed a 48.34 split anchoring the 4x400m at the World Relays in Botswana.
That's the form of her life, and she was carrying it into a major championship.
What it costs Ireland
The women's 4x400m will certainly feel the hit. Mawdsley's anchor leg has become the closing act of Irish relay running in recent times. Rome 2024 is the reference point, she came off the last bend in second and ran down the field to win mixed 4x400m gold, Ireland's first European gold since Sonia O'Sullivan's 5,000m and 10,000m double in 1998. Silver in the women's 4x400m followed.
Birmingham was never going to be a repeat of the mixed relay run. Ireland didn't hold their qualifying spot in that event this time. So the women's quartet was the medal shot, and it's now down two of its listed six. Rachel McCann withdrew from the 400m and relay earlier this month, also through injury.
Adeleke, Becker, Manning and Crossan carry it from here.
The thank-yous
Mawdsley used her statement to name the people who tried to get her there. Coach Martina McCarthy, physio Paul Carragher, Athletics Ireland. She also singled out Mikey Breen, who'd been her training partner through the final fortnight of the push.
Later this season
She's not writing off 2026. Mawdsley says she's looking forward to getting back on the track before the year is out.
Given how the summer had been going, plenty of people will want to see that. Hamstring tears don't negotiate, though, and the sensible read is that the rest of the season becomes about getting healthy rather than chasing times.
The championships run at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium from August 10th to 16th. Ireland travel with 47 athletes.
