The Irish Senior Track and Field Championships rarely disappoint, and this year's edition at Morton Stadium was no exception. Championship records tumbled, long standing reigns came to an end, and some of Ireland's biggest stars delivered when it mattered most ahead of the European Championships.

One of the standout moments of the weekend came in the women's 1500m, where Sophie O'Sullivan not only claimed the national title but also broke a championship record that had stood for 31 years. Her winning time of 4:05.62 eclipsed the previous mark of 4:07.09, set by her mother Sonia O'Sullivan at the 1995 championships.

It was a fitting passing of the torch in one of Irish athletics' most famous families. To make the achievement even more impressive, both Laura Nicholson and Jodie McCann also finished inside Sonia's long standing record, underlining the quality of the race, but it was O'Sullivan who secured her place in the championship record books.

Rhasidat Adeleke Finds Her Form at the Perfect Time

After a frustrating 12 months disrupted by injury and inconsistent performances, Rhasidat Adeleke arrived at the Irish Senior Track and Field Championships with everything on the line. The Tallaght AC sprinter needed to run 22.85 or quicker in the women's 200m to secure automatic qualification for next month's European Championships, and with the qualifying window closing, there would be no second chances.

When the pressure was at its highest, Adeleke delivered. She powered to the national title in 22.80, five hundredths inside the qualifying standard despite running into a headwind, sealing her place on the team for Birmingham. Afterwards, she admitted it had been a "rough year", with hamstring injuries repeatedly disrupting her progress, making the performance all the more satisfying. There could hardly have been a better place to produce it than in front of a home crowd at Morton Stadium, and it could prove to be the turning point in her season heading into the European Championships.

Andrew Coscoran Ends Cathal Doyle's Reign

The Men's 1500m had all the ingredients to be one of the races of the weekend, and it lived up to expectations. Andrew Coscoran reclaimed the national title in 3:44.07, ending Cathal Doyle's bid to become the first man in recent history to win five consecutive Irish outdoor 1500m championships.

Doyle had dominated the event since 2022, winning four straight national titles and arriving in Morton Stadium chasing another piece of history. Instead, it was Coscoran who produced when it mattered most, adding a second outdoor national 1500m title to his collection and reminding everyone why he remains one of Ireland's leading middle distance runners heading into the European Championships

Sarah Lavin's Remarkable 100m Hurdles Reign Continues with 11th National Title

There are few athletes who have dominated an event at the Irish Senior Track and Field Championships quite like Sarah Lavin. The Emerald AC hurdler added yet another chapter to her remarkable career on Saturday, claiming an 11th national outdoor 100m hurdles title with a commanding victory in 13.34 seconds.

For more than a decade, Lavin has been the benchmark in Irish sprint hurdling, collecting national titles while establishing herself among Europe's elite and rewriting the Irish record books. At 32, she continues to set the standard, and with the European Championships just around the corner, another national crown serves as the perfect reminder that she remains one of Ireland's most dependable performers on the biggest stage.

Benjamin Richardson Lives up to the Hype

There was no shortage of anticipation surrounding Benjamin Richardson's debut at the Irish Senior Track and Field Championships, and the Waterford AC sprinter delivered in emphatic fashion. Richardson got his weekend off to the perfect start by winning the 200m title on Saturday in 20.64 seconds, before returning on Sunday to storm to victory in the 100m in a championship record 10.13 seconds, completing a memorable sprint double.

The former South African international has quickly become one of the most talked about athletes in Irish athletics, and his performances in Morton Stadium showed exactly why. Although he will have to wait until 2027 before becoming eligible to represent Ireland internationally, Richardson has already raised the standard of domestic sprinting, and his victories over the weekend set the stage for some fascinating battles with the likes of Bori Akinola and Israel Olatunde in the years ahead.
