HER Outdoors Week, spearheaded by Sport Ireland, is dedicated to encouraging women to explore and enjoy the outdoors. The week-long events are aimed at increasing female participation in outdoor physical activities and spotlighting the various opportunities available for women to get involved. With local Sports Partnerships across the country lending their support, the initiative has already seen successful events in Galway and Roscommon.
This evening, the focus shifts to Sligo, where the Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, in collaboration with the Irish Mountain Running Association (IMRA), is hosting a trail running event at Knocknarea. Building on the success of previous events earlier in the year, this trail run aims to attract even more women to the sport.
Theresa Kilgannon from the Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership shared insights into the event with Run Republic, highlighting its dual approach. The Sligo trail run features both a 4km and an 8km option, making it accessible for beginners and a challenge for more seasoned runners. The event is designed to be a guided social run, offering participants an opportunity to learn trail running techniques from experienced trail runners, enjoy breathtaking views from the mountain top, and connect with other women passionate about trail running.
Post-run, participants will be treated to a well-deserved pizza gathering at the Strand Bar. With 43 women signed up and a team of 8 IMRA West volunteers, the Sligo event promises to be another inspiring and enjoyable experience.
By creating welcoming and supportive environments, initiatives like this are paving the way for more women to embrace trail running and other outdoor pursuits.
