Mark English and Sarah Lavin delivered some memorable performances in Paris, despite both athletes ultimately falling short this morning.
Mark English delivered a commendable performance in the 800m semi-final this morning, showcasing the grit and skill that have defined his career. In a race marked by fierce competition, English surged ahead in what seemed like a strategic move to seize the lead. Unfortunately, this push came perhaps a touch too early, and he was overtaken in the final 50 metres. English finished outside the top spots, missing out on a place in the final.
English's semi-final time of 1:45.97 and his impressive heat performance of 1:45.15 earlier in the week reflect his high caliber. While he did not advance to the final, his performances throughout these Olympics have been nothing short of exemplary and he has done himself proud.
Sarah Lavin also experienced the sting of just falling short of her Olympic dreams. In the 100m hurdles semi-final, Lavin came heartbreakingly close to breaking her National Record, finishing only 0.07 seconds shy of her personal best. Despite her valiant effort, the intense competition meant that even a record-breaking performance would not have been enough to secure a place in the final.
Lavin's semi-final time of 12.69 and her heat performance of 12.73 earlier in the week are hugely impressive and reflective of her hard work and talent. Her performance at these Games demonstrated her capability at this level, and though she did not progress further, her achievements on this grand stage have earned her national pride.
As English and Lavin conclude their campaigns in Paris, both leave knowing they have contributed stand-out performances in what has been an unforgettable Olympic Games for Ireland.
