The Hit Race Returning This Weekend!

January 19, 2024

The Great Heath Run returns to the athletics calendar this weekend, January 21st, with its annual 10k and 5k races.

Organised by The Heath GAA club in County Laois, the run has been a hit with the people of the area in the many years its launch and Run Republic had a chat with organiser John Browne about what the participants can expect from this year’s event.

‘Last year we had close to 300 people taking part, and it is looking like it is going to be a similar number of runners once again this year!

‘The event has a real family fun run element to it, as well as chip timing for more competitive runners.

‘The 10k, which is a loop, kicks off at 11am on Sunday, followed by the 5k which will start roughly 10 minutes later.’

John told Run Republic that the 5k route was introduced a number of years ago to attract more runners who maybe didn’t feel confident in their ability to complete a full 10k.

What makes this event stand out from the crowd is the replacement of a medal with something very unique.

To highlight the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan once again, instead of providing a medal, all entrants who register online get the option of either taking home a potted heather or of having a heather planted in the club grounds.

Parking, changing rooms, toilets, and shower facilities are provided by The Heath GAA club and the race will be followed by refreshments for everybody who takes part!
