July 12, 2024

This weekend, from the 12th to the 14th of July, the Reeks mountains will host the much-anticipated IMRA Munster Reeks Running Festival. Under the guidance of chief organiser and race director Robbie Williams, the festival promises an unforgettable experience for all mountain runners with five distinct races spread across three days.

Friday, 12th July - Reeks Vertical 800

The festival kicks off this evening, Friday, with the Reeks Vertical 800. This intense race challenges runners to conquer an 800m climb over a distance of just 3km. It's a short but gruelling test of stamina and strength, setting the tone for the weekend ahead.

Saturday, 13th July - Reeks Skyline

Saturday's highlight is the Reeks Skyline, a high-level race that requires preapproval to enter due to its extreme difficulty. Covering 24km with a staggering 2,400m of elevation gain, this race traverses some of the most rugged and challenging terrain in the Reeks. It's a true test of endurance and skill, drawing elite runners from far and wide.

Sunday, 14th July - A Trio of Races

Sunday features a trio of races, catering to various levels of experience.

  • 11am: 3 Lakes Of The Glen This 9.6km race includes 600m of elevation gain and offers runners a stunning tour of the Glen's three lakes. It's a race with moderate difficulty, perfect for those looking to enjoy the scenic beauty of the area while still facing a solid challenge.
  • 12pm: Cronins Yard Trail For those new to trail running, the Cronins Yard Trail is an ideal choice. This 6km race with 200m of elevation gain provides a gentle introduction to the sport. Its approachable distance and elevation make it a favourite for beginners looking to dip their toes into trail running.
  • 1pm: Carrauntoohil Classic The festival concludes with the Carrauntoohil Classic, a prestigious race that's part of both the Munster and Irish Championships. This year's race features a new, tougher route: 17km with 1,600m of elevation gain. It's a demanding challenge, promising a thrilling finale to the weekend's events.

Many participants choose to spend the entire weekend at Cronins Yard, creating a vibrant and supportive community atmosphere. The post-race gatherings are a highlight, offering runners a chance to share stories, celebrate their achievements, and enjoy the company of fellow trail and mountain runners.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the festival's success, often running in one race and then assisting with others. Their dedication and passion help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants.

Whether you're a competitive runner aiming for the podium, a novice eager to explore trail running, or a volunteer looking to support this incredible event, the IMRA Munster Reeks Running Festival promises an unforgettable weekend of adventure, challenge, and community.
