Anticipation Peaks for the Grand Finale of the Galway 5km Series

May 28, 2024

Today marks the culmination of the 2024 Galway 5km Series, with Athenry Athletic Club (AC) hosting the final leg this evening. This year’s series, which began on April 23rd, has been hailed as another resounding success, emphasising community spirit and personal achievement over competition and prizes.

Before the series kicked off, Colm McAllen highlighted to Run Republic the ethos behind the event, explaining that 'it's not about frills or prizes; it's about the shared experience of pushing oneself, cheering each other on, and fostering a sense of togetherness.' This philosophy has certainly resonated throughout the series, creating a supportive and enthusiastic environment for all participants.

In a conversation with Run Republic ahead of the final race, McAllen expressed his gratitude to those who made the series possible. "Just a lot of thank yous. To our other race series director, Colm Byrne from EGAC, for ensuring all these events ran seamlessly. To our stalwarts, John S. O'Connor and Andrew Talbot, for capturing incredible photos of all runners. Their work has truly been appreciated by everyone involved."

McAllen extended his thanks to the series' sponsors, including EY for their continued support and Craughwell Tyres, who joined this year. He also acknowledged past and present sponsors for their invaluable contributions. "I also want to thank every single member of the clubs who either grabbed a volunteer or volunteered themselves to marshal, hand out race numbers and water, and help set up or mark each route. Thank you all."

He also expressed his gratitude to the local communities for their support, which helped create an incredible atmosphere along each route, and to the race directors for their behind-the-scenes efforts. "Thank you one and all," McAllen concluded.

As we approach the final race, excitement is building for a grandstand finish. The race is scheduled to start at 8pm sharp in Athenry. Participants are reminded to wear their race numbers pinned to the front of their T-shirts or singlets to ensure accurate timing. Those needing to pick up a race number and T-shirt today should arrive before 7.30pm.

The Galway 5km Series has once again demonstrated the power of community and the joy of shared achievement, and tonight’s race promises to be a fitting finale to this celebrated event.
