Bandon Athletic Club is set to revive its road racing tradition with a highly anticipated 5k Road Race scheduled for this evening, Thursday, April 25th, at 7:30 pm. This event marks a significant return for the club, as it's their first road race since 2019 when the Donough Coughlan 5-mile event last took place.
One of the most exciting aspects of this year's race is the revised course, offering a fresh challenge for seasoned participants. Unlike previous editions, the race will start adjacent to Colaiste Na Toirbhirte and head towards Kilbrittain Rd. Runners will then make a left turn onto the Kilbrittain Road, sticking to the left-hand side for approximately 500 meters. The course will then veer left off the main road into Curraveda East, navigating through crossroads and scenic rural stretches, including parts of the Monarone and Tullyland roads. The final stretch will lead runners onto the Mill Road, culminating before the junction by the Old Still and the Mart—a familiar finish line for past events.
What sets this year's race apart is its exclusion of bypass sections or urban areas, emphasising a scenic route that promises a fast 5km experience. Participants can anticipate quick times, thanks to the course's slight downhill gradients.
The race isn't just about athletic prowess; it's also a chance to contribute to the club's track development fund. All proceeds from the event will go towards enhancing Bandon AC's facilities, a move that promises to elevate not only the club's offerings but also the overall athletics scene in Cork.
Registration is open to anyone aged 13 and above, and for those who missed the online window, late registrations will be accepted on-site this evening between 6pm and 7pm, with a requested fee of €20 in cash, if possible.
Post-race celebrations and prize presentations will take place at Colaiste Na Toirbhirte, where participants can also collect their race numbers until 7:15 pm. The school's generous support in providing facilities adds a community touch to the event, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the athletic community.
Bandon AC's 5k Road Race marks the beginning of what promises to be a vibrant return for road racing in the region. With an enticing course, charitable contributions, and post-race festivities, it's an event that showcases the best of athleticism and community spirit.
