March 04, 2024

The Mushera Boggeragh IMRA Mountain race marked the commencement of the Fog in the Bog series, and it was nothing short of an exhilarating adventure for participants. Run Republic recently caught up with Mags Hassett, the PRO of the Irish Mountain Running Association (IMRA) Munster Committee, who provided insights into the challenging race and highlighted the remarkable experiences of both seasoned and novice mountain runners.

For many participants, this race served as their initiation into open mountain racing. The event unfolded with a mix of weather conditions, showcasing the unpredictable nature of mountain racing. Runners traversed through four distinct seasons during the race, encountering knee-high snow, and even braving a hail shower – a true test of resilience and adaptability.

The long course, spanning 10.8 kilometers with 500 meters of elevation gain, witnessed fierce competition. In the female category, the top three finishers were Lianne van Dijk, Mairead O'Keeffe, and Alice Hynes. On the male side, Nick Hogan secured the first position, followed by Cillian Fleming and Henry Browne, completing the podium.

The short course, covering 5 kilometers, had its own share of impressive performances. Faye O'Riordan claimed the top spot among the female participants, joined on the podium by Sarah Gough and Karen Walsh. Among the male participants on the short course, Michael Kelleher emerged as the winner, with Dara Kelleher and Jack Barrett securing the second and third positions, respectively.

The success of the Mushera Boggeragh IMRA Mountain race wouldn't have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the organising team. Race Director Tricia Twohig, along with a team of enthusiastic volunteers, played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth execution of the event. Their efforts created a memorable day for all participants.

As the mountain running season in Munster unfolds, the IMRA calendar promises more exciting challenges. The half and full Nagles marathon, scheduled for the 9th of March, are expected to attract avid mountain runners. Following that, the Fog in the Bog series continues with the next race set to take place on the 16th of March at Mt. Claragh.

The Mushera Boggeragh IMRA Mountain race not only tested the physical limits of participants but provided a space for the shared passion among mountain running enthusiasts. The diverse weather conditions added an extra layer of challenge, making it a truly unforgettable experience. With upcoming races on the horizon, the mountain running community eagerly awaits more opportunities to conquer new heights and push their limits.
