Glendalough Tucker Trail 2024: A Gruelling Adventure With High Spirits

July 23, 2024

This year’s edition of the Glendalough Tucker Trail offered runners a challenging and exhilarating experience, featuring 50 miles of testing trails and a mix of weather conditions that ranged from difficult heat and almost constant rain to glorious sunshine. Despite the demanding environment, the event saw a high completion rate among the 48 participants, with an outstanding 100% finish rate among the women who took to the start line.

The 80k Glendalough Tucker Trail Ultra race showcased exceptional performances from both male and female runners. In the female category, Sarah Clarke clinched the top spot, followed by Catherine Devitt in second place and Denise Barrett in third. The male category was won by Enda Cloake, with Maciej Dzieledziak in second place and Giraud Sebastien finishing in joint-third place alongside Niall Corless.

Running alongside the ultra marathon was the Clover Relay, featuring 14 teams who set off with a staggered start from 8:25 to 9:30am. The winning team from the Lakeshore Striders, comprising Maria Harney, Liam Mooney, and Niamh Brophy, demonstrated outstanding teamwork and endurance along the course. They were followed by the team of Mae Mullholland, Colin Salmon, and Deagla MacAree in second place. The team of Alan Hynes, Grace Nugent, and Harold Perez rounded out the top three.

The Glendalough Tucker Trail is as much about community spirit and togetherness as it is about athletic achievement. Thanks to the dedication of the runners and the support of the volunteers, the event was a resounding success. Special recognition goes to Race Directors Greg Byrne and James Tucker, whose efforts in organising both events were instrumental in creating a memorable day for everyone involved.

As the day progressed and the sun broke through the clouds, runners and spectators alike gathered at the finish line by the upper lake in Glendalough. The scenic setting provided the perfect backdrop for celebrations after such a memorable event.

The Glendalough Tucker Trail continues to exceed expectations, offering a unique and rewarding challenge for all participants. The blend of natural beauty, togetherness, and athletic excellence ensures that this event remains a beloved tradition year after year.
