Day 2 of the World Masters Athletics Championships saw Team Ireland delivering more impressive performances across multiple events, once again highlighting the depth and talent within the 117-athlete deep squad.
Shane Sheridan’s standout performance in the M65 100m earned him a well-deserved bronze medal. His strong sprinting showcased both speed and consistency once again, earning him a significant achievement on the world stage with a bronze for Ireland.
The medals didn't stop there, as in the W55 category Geraldine Finegan claimed a bronze medal in the Heptathlon, a testament to her versatility and endurance. Her performance throughout the event showed a tireless work rate and exceptional skill across multiple disciplines, culminating in a podium finish that underscores her athletic ability.
Sinead O'Regan, competing in the W45 category, delivered a great effort to reach the final. Although she was narrowly edged out of the medals, her performance in the final was impressive and highlights her quality on this stage.
Laura Frey's talent was on display, competing in the W35 category, as she secured a 4th place finish. Her performance was notably highlighted by an excellent run in the 800m, where she emerged victorious. Frey's ability to excel in this demanding multi-event discipline speaks volumes about her athletic capabilities and dedication.
Tina Gallagher, competing in the W60 category, started Day 1 of her Heptathlon campaign with a strong performance. She comfortably won her 200m heat with a time of 31.99 seconds. This impressive start sets a solid foundation for the remaining events in her Heptathlon.
Mary Horgan, in the W35 category, also made significant strides by advancing comfortably to the final of the 800m. Her smooth progression through the heats suggests that she is well-prepared for the final, where she will look to build on her strong performances so far and perhaps claim another medal for Team Ireland.
Overall, Day 2 of the World Masters Athletics Championships was a positive one for Team Ireland. As we eagerly watch Day 3 unfold, Irish supporters at home and in Gothenburg remain hopeful of a memorable Championships in Sweden over the coming days.
