The Galtymore race this year was much-anticipated and it finally took place on Sunday under nearly perfect weather conditions. The race concluded with the announcement of the 2024 Irish Champions, with Esther Dickson and Matthew McConnell claiming the prestigious titles.
Speaking to Run Republic, Mags Hassett reflected on the day’s conditions: "As I drove to the start point, you could not see any mountains as they were all in the clouds, but before we started, the cloud lifted, and we had fantastic weather and visibility for both races." The participants navigated a challenging 13km course, which featured a significant elevation gain of 1,300 metres.
The competition was fierce, particularly in the women's race, where less than two minutes separated the top two finishers. Esther Dickson emerged victorious, followed closely by Becky Quinn in second place and Deirdre O'Gorman in third. On the men's side, Matthew McConnell took the top spot, with Elvin Laugier and Nick Hogan finishing second and third, respectively. These incredible performances from both Dickson and McConnell secured their Irish titles.
The Galtymore race is revered among runners, known for its demanding course and breathtaking scenery. It served as a fitting finale to the Irish Championships, solidifying its status as a beloved event in the IMRA calendar.
In addition to the Galtymore race, the Cush - Galtees race also took place on Sunday. This shorter, yet still challenging race spanned 4.5km with an elevation gain of 400m. Kealey Tideswell claimed first place in the women's category, followed by Sarah Whelan and Edith Steele. In the men’s category, Diarmuid McNamara emerged as the winner, with Liam Casey and David Lanigan taking second and third places.
Special recognition goes to Race Director Vivian O'Gorman and his dedicated team of volunteers, who ensured the events were executed seamlessly. Their efforts were crucial in delivering a successful day of competition.
As the dust settles on the Irish Championships, runners now look ahead to the next event in the IMRA Munster calendar, the Kilworth Woods race, scheduled for Sunday, August 25th. This race, part of the Summer/Autumn Trail League, promises yet another exciting challenge for mountain runners.
