National Senior Indoor Championships

Silver for Katie Bergin
Another hectic weekend of indoor athletics with the best of Ireland's athletes performing at the National Senior Indoor Championships in Abbottstown on Saturday and Sunday last, this being World Indoor Championships Glasgow, World Relay's Bahamas, and Olympics Paris, athletes were out in force to show the powers that be where they are in terms of performance and put their name in the hat for upcoming international events. Sarah Lavin, Sharlene Mawdsley, Phil Healy, Sophie Becker, and Louise Shanahan all household names on the international circuit were amongst the five hundred and sixty five athletes entered for this years championships, the largest entry in many years. Amongst those was Moyne AC's only competitor Katie Bergin entered in the 200m and 60m. After the recent successes at U/23, AI Games and Intervarsities Championships it was time to take on the elite of Irish female athletics. There was eight heats in the 200m and qualification to the final was the six fastest times, easy for the officials a nightmare for the athletes, winning your heat no guarantee of a lane in the final so their was no hiding place. Olympian Phil Healy set the standard in heat one running 23.59s, Katie Bergin lined out in lane six, heat two and had to clock a PB of 24.33s and had to sit out the remaining six heats before being sure of a place in the final, as it turned out Katie recorded the second fastest time of the eight heats which guarnteed her lane five in the final with Phil Healy out in lane six. In the final at 3.30pm Katie came out of the blocks hard and managed to stay in good contact with Healy for 150m, Healy's years of 400m endurance gave her the edge entering the final straight, Katie crossed the line in second place with another PB of 24.26s, 0.89s off the winner and 0.57s ahead of Alana Ryan in third. Bronze in '23, Silver in '24 hopefully that gold will come some day. Running thirteen races in thirty five days and getting nine PB's in the process took its toll and the chance of doing herself justice in the 60m on Sunday was a bridge to far on this occasion. The opportunity will come again. Breaking the 24 second barrier for Katie is now a real possibility, training under the guidance of Alan and The Cork Speed Development Group is paying huge dividends, this is a group of dedicated high performance sprinters. Congrats Katie.
