There were three athletes in action last night at the Reunión Internacional de Atletismo in Bilboa, Spain. Tullamore Harriers athlete, James Dunne, took part in the 1500m B race and recorded a time of 3.40.54 to finish second. This was just less than one second off the personal best he ran in Watford ten days ago. The race was won by Abdurrahman Gediklioğlu of Turkey in a time of 3.39.25. This was the perfect race for Dunne as he was one of six athletes who ran together for much of the race, all of whom were chasing a sub-3.40-minute time. As with most races of this type, the winner was the quickest to wind up, with the Turk running a blistering final 100m.
Ireland’s Paul Robinson competed in the 1,500m A race. Despite his return to good form in Australia earlier this year where he ran 3.36.57, last night was not meant to be for Robinson. The St Coca’s AC athlete, who is part of the Dublin Track Club, could only manage 3.46.46. The race was won by Spaniard Javier Muron Caron in 3.34.
Laura Mooney competed in the 10,000m at the European Championships in Rome just over a week ago. Last night she turned to the shorter distance of 5,000m, where she finished 9th in a time of 16.19.32. The Tullamore Harriers athlete, who has been on scholarship at Providence College, Rhode Island, has a personal best of 15.59, which she achieved in Philadelphia in April of this year. Last night’s race is, however, her second-best 5,000m of the season.
