Historic Finals and Semi-Final Battles Cap Memorable Opening Day for Ireland at European Championships

Following a action-packed morning session, the opening day of the European Athletics Championships concluded with historic milestones, grit, and invaluable major championship experience for Team Ireland. From a landmark performance in the field to top-eight finishes and brave semi-final efforts on the track, Day 1 delivered plenty of drama across both sessions.

English Masterclass and Raftery Progress in Morning Heats

The action began in earnest during the morning session, headlined by a textbook performance from Mark English in the men's 800m. The Donegal athlete executed a tactical masterclass, controlling the pace before surging ahead to win Heat 1 in 1:46.96 to cruise into Wednesday's semi-finals. In heat four, Cian McPhillips battled admirably despite feeling under the weather, finishing 7th in 1:46.84 and missing out on progression.

In the men's 400m, Jack Raftery produced an exceptionally calculated run in heat two, powering across the line in 2nd place with a sharp time of 45.81s to secure his place in the semi-finals.

Sprint Semi-Finals and Hurdles Battle

In the women's 100m, Ciara Neville capitalised on a strong tailwind in the morning heats (11.29s) to reach the semi-finals, where her individual campaign ended in the evening session with an 11.57s effort. Teammate Lauren Roy narrowly missed out on the semi-finals in the morning despite a strong 11.32s run in less wind-assisted conditions; both will return for the 4x100m relay. In the 100m hurdles semi-finals, Sarah Lavin clocked a season’s best of 13.07s to place 6th in her heat, falling just short of the top 12 times required for the final.

Griggs Leads Irish Trio with Superb Top-Eight Finish

In a fast and grueling men's 5000m final featuring three Irish athletes, young star Nick Griggs delivered a standout and heroic performance. The Tyrone athlete showed remarkable tactical maturity against a stacked continental field, stopping the clock in 13:21.07 to secure a superb 8th-place finish in Europe. Incredibly, Griggs ran roughly the last mile with just one shoe after losing it in a pack collision making his top-eight finish all the more remarkable as he continues his rise in the senior ranks. Fellow Irishmen Brian Fay and Darragh McElhinney showed great grit in a relentless pace, finishing 14th and 18th respectively to cap off a proud three-man representation.

Favors Makes History in Men’s Shot Put Final

Having squeaked into the final in 12th place during the morning qualification with a 19.54m throw, Eric Favors returned to the ring for the evening session looking to push further. The Raheny Shamrocks athlete did exactly that, improving on his morning effort by 6cm to launch a best throw of 19.59m. Finishing 10th overall, Favors created history by becoming the first-ever Irish athlete to feature in a men's European shot put final, a major breakthrough for Irish field athletics on the continental stage.

Tuthill Launches Her Way Into Hammer Final

In the field, Nicola Tuthill produced a sparkling qualification performance in the women's hammer throw. The Cork athlete unleashed a brilliant 70.09m attempt to finish 4th in her group, comfortably booking her spot in Wednesday's final.

Sheridan Gains Essential Experience

Competing in Heat 2 of the women's 3000m steeplechase, Abby Sheridan delivered a brave effort, finishing 14th in 9:57.50 to gain valuable experience on the major European stage.
