Athletics continues to thrive in Galway as we highlight rising sprinter Sophie Farrell. The 18-year-old runs for South Galway AC in the 60m, 100m, and 200m, and is trained by European Masters Medallist Jim Phelan. Farrell, who is currently studying for her Leaving Certificate, is a student in Seamount College in Kinvara.
Farrell is an U18 Indoor Champion for the 60m, as well as holding an All-Ireland medal for the U18 Outdoor 100m. The South Galway AC alum also has an U19 60m Indoor All-Ireland medal to her name.
Already this year, Farrell has made a heat with sprinter Joan Healy at the Indoor League with a time of 7.88 and aims to achieve more PB’s in 2024.
Sophie is the Connacht champion for the U19 100m, while also being the Schools South Connacht Champion in the 100m and 200m.

Run Republic reached out to Sophie's club, South Galway AC, and they responded in glowing terms about the up and coming sprinter, saying 'Sophie is a wonderfully dedicated and hard-working athlete who continues to inspire the younger people in our club!'
In conversation with Sophie, she told me that her aspirations for the year ahead are ‘to reach some new PBs, win another All-Ireland, and hopefully meet a National Standard!’
Run Republic have no doubt that Sophie will achieve these goals and more, and we look forward to watching her continue to make her school, club, coaches, and family proud!
